Fishing Report 12/4/09

Now that the dangerous winds have temporarily subsided, anglers have hit the water hard this week in spite of the freezing cold. We’ve had a couple fish weighed in each day, the biggest this week being a 12lb 3 oz Blackmouth; not quite big enough to take the lead in our derby, but a beauty nonetheless.

Elger Bay and Greenbank seem to be producing the best results. Average seems to be 1 in 3 boats netting a keeper. Herring and spoons are getting the most bites, almost no action on hootchies.

Don’t forget, as of Nov. 30th, Marine area 9 was closed to Salmon fishing. It reopens again on January 16th, 2010.

Fishing Report 11/8/09

Well, the Winter Blackmouth season opened with mixed results. Sunday, Nov. 1st definitely saw the best fishing, with the fish-checker at Camano State Park checking 22 fish out of 14 boats! However, the success has been tapering off daily. Most of these juvenile Chinook are of decent size; the average we’ve seen have been between 6 and 10 pounds.

The majority of anglers we’ve talked to have been getting bites at 75-90 feet deep in 120 feet of water using either Coho Killer spoons or a green/glow hootchie with a strip of herring. Also, you should be running a 42-46″ leader off of your flasher to create a longer, swooping arc in the water.

In an effort to get as many anglers participating as possible, and after much consideration as to preventing cheating, we have decided to allow sign ups throughout the duration of the derby(Nov. 1 – Apr. 30). However, you cannot weigh in a fish until 3 days have passed since you signed up.

Again, the cost is just $10 and 1st place gets 75% of the ticket sales… but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t bring in every Salmon you catch, because there will be a mystery weight which will recieve the remaining 25%!
