Fishing Report 8/24/2009

Today saw the first report in weeks of Salmon on both sides of Camano heading up to the rivers. One angler got 2 great keepers down off of Tyee beach, while another couple of boats had success in Elger Bay. Could it be the start of this year’s main Humpy run? We’ll wait to make that judgement for right now.

Fishing Report 8/20/09

Tuesday and Wednesday morning the reports were that the south end of Camano, the race track and Kayak Pt were all loaded with Humpys, with most anglers limiting out.

However, Wednesday night and this morning the new info is that the school may have moved north and might now be entirely in front of Kayak Pt and the mouth of the Stilly. A couple of local residents who live on the east side of Camano report catching them last night off their beach after getting skunked at the race track…

I’m going to do my best to update this blog daily or every other day throughout the Humpy run, since the very nature of the season is a day by day endeavor to find them. Please make sure you stop by the store and let me know how you did and where so that I can pass that info on to other anglers.

Fishing Report 8/13/2009

The latest reports on this year’s Humpy run indicates that its already begun, which in past years hasn’t happened until the end of August. Anglers are having luck both trolling and casting off the beach. They aren’t yet thick enough to walk across like the state is predicting they will be once the run is in full swing, but they can be seen jumping close to shore here and there. At Camano Island State Park, the most success is being seen with 2″ and 2 1/2″ pink buzz bombs and Humpy Special spoons. A couple of anglers have even caught some Silvers. ..

Offshore, they are catching them with larger buzz bombs(casting) and herring(trolling). The “race track”, an area between the south end of Camano Island and the north end of Hat Island, was seeing great results with trolled herring last week. One pair of fishermen report having caught 2-3 Humpys per day, every day! Yesterday, however, the word was that the school had moved past the south end of the island already.

Reports on Summer Chinook in Area 9 have all but died since last week. My dad and several other locals all tried their luck at various spots with no results. Fish finders showed plenty of dots in the more shallow water(Humpys), but no glimpses of the coveted Kings down deeper.

Two-pole fishing option starts Aug. 15 on most state lakes

OLYMPIA – Recreational anglers will soon have the option of using two poles while fishing in most Washington lakes under a new law passed by the state Legislature.

Effective Aug. 15, the two-pole endorsement option will apply to the majority of the 8,000 fishing lakes, ponds and reservoirs in Washington state. Endorsements will be available Aug. 13 from authorized license dealers, listed at http://wdfw.wa.gov/lic/vendors/vendors.htm , or from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) at https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/ .

Anglers wishing to take advantage of the new opportunity will be required to pay a $20 fee ($5 for resident seniors) for the endorsement, which is in addition to the recreational fishing license issued by WDFW. A surcharge and transaction fee will also apply.

Revenue generated from the new fees will go toward hatchery fish production.

Because approximately 145 lakes and ponds will be excluded from the two-pole endorsement program, anglers should check the regulations carefully before they go fishing, said Phil Anderson, WDFW interim director. The list of excluded lakes and ponds is available online at http://wdfw.wa.gov/licensing/twopole/ . Saltwater fisheries and fisheries on rivers and streams will also be excluded.

“Our department priority is to protect and conserve Washington’s fish populations, while providing fishing opportunities for anglers,” Anderson said. “The new legislation will help us achieve both by improving prospects for catching hatchery trout and warm-water fish in the state’s lakes, while excluding areas where populations are more vulnerable,” Anderson said.

Excluded waters are those with conservation issues, such as waters containing threatened or endangered species, or lakes designated for specific management objectives, such as juvenile-only fishing lakes.

Anderson said the department will also evaluate additional areas and situations where two-pole fishing may be allowed in the future. He encouraged the public to provide comments on the new law during WDFW’s 2010-11 sportfishing rule-making process in early September.

When the new endorsement option goes into effect Aug. 15, all fishing regulations, such as size, species and daily limits, will still apply.

“Having a second pole may help anglers catch their daily limit of fish faster, but the limit and other regulations will remain the same,” Anderson said.

For more information, visit WDFW’s website at http://wdfw.wa.gov/licensing/ , or call WDFW’s licensing department at (360) 902-2464.

Fishing Report 7/28/2009

Reports are that this year’s Summer Salmon fishing  is HOT! One angler, who’s fished the Puget Sound for decades, told me yesterday that this is the best Summer for Chinook in Area 9 he’s ever had, as far as size and quality goes.

Specifically, he had a 15 pounder he got from Bush Point. On Sunday, two anglers brought in a 21# and a 12# from Point no Point and on Saturday someone had a nice keeper from Possession.

Al Pualani, the winner of our ‘06 Derby,  just got back from Sekiu last week and said they not only limited out on Chinook and Coho, but they also couldn’t keep the Humpys off the line! If that info is any indication, the Humpy opener up here should be fantastic. In case you weren’t paying attention, Coho and Humpys open in Areas 8-1 & 8-2 this Saturday, August 1st. He also said that Coho Killer spoons were outfishing Coyote spoons 10:1!

If you haven’t already, you need to signup for our derby on August 29th and 30th. The more participants we have, not only do we raise more for the charity, but the prize money pool gets bigger too!
