Elger Bay’s “Running” Winter Blackmouth Derby

What do we mean by “running”? That means that it isn’t just one or two days like most derbies; this derby starts on November 1st and doesn’t end until April 30th next year(the close of the season)! And you can weigh in a fish every day that you catch one(obviously it has to be a different fish each time) at any time we are open, which is 6am – 9pm, 7 days a week.

All WDFW rules apply and fish must be from the saltwater in marine areas 8-1, 8-2 or 9; no river fish will be accepted. The entry fee is just $10 per person regardless of age and everyone in the boat must be entered for the fish to be valid. And the best part? 100% of the entry fees collected will be given away as prize money!

Sign ups start now and don’t end until the derby is over, but if you sign up after October 31st, you have to wait 2 days before a fish can be weighed in to prevent cheating. So get in to the store and sign up today!

Charity Derby Results

Here are the results from our charity derby:

1st place – Karl Ostrom, 7lb 14oz $300 cash
2nd place – Chad Huffman, 6lb 8oz, $75 cash
3rd place – John Nunnaly, 6lb 5oz, St Croix rod/reel combo

Chad Huffman also had the biggest fish on Friday at 5lb 11oz and won 5 gallons of free gas from Gull gasoline!

LOTS of fish were caught; almost everyone weighed in at least one fish. Most of the fish were caught at Camano Head. Derby participation was pretty small but everybody got a prize and I hope everyone had fun. Besides, the point of the derby was to raise money for a local charity and we did: $450 was given to ServeItUp!

Since participation was lower than hoped, we set aside some pretty sweet prizes and are selling raffle tickets at the store for those prizes all this week until 10am on Friday when we will do the drawing. Tickets are just $1 each or 15 for $10 and ANYONE can buy tickets. 100% of the money raised in this raffle will go to ServeItUp to supplement what the derby raised. The prizes that you could win are:

A Michelob Ultra Golf Bag
A Dr. Pepper cooler with speakers on wheels
A Daiwa Exceler reel
5 Five Gallon Gas Coupons for Gull gasoline
2 One month memberships to Resilience Fitness
1 year of FREE mailbox rental from Copy This Mail That
4 tickets to the Camano Is. Chamber’s Chili/Chowder cookoff

Derby Signups extended

In order to raise more money for ServeItUp, the charity benefitting from our derby, we have decided to extend derby signups through all of Friday. However, anyone who signs up AFTER 7am may not weigh-in a fish until Saturday in order to prevent cheating. This also has the added benefit of increasing the amount of cash prizes that will be awarded! We close at 9pm nightly.

There’s a new derby leader in town…

Jeff Audet, owner of FISHBONES Guide Service on Camano Island, brought in an enormous 23lb 0oz Blackmouth today! This fish of course takes the lead in the Elger Bay Grocery running derby from Glen Helton with his 17lb 3oz fish that was caught back in November. There’s still 2 weeks left for all of you other anglers to get in on the derby action(must wait 3 days before weighing a fish though) with our wrap-up happening on Saturday, April 30th. Just think, this fish could’ve been yours if you had been Jeff’s customer today… 360-913-3107.

Salmon Derby THIS WEEKEND!

Friday night at 9pm is the deadline for sign ups for the Elger Bay Grocery 3rd 50/50 Charity Salmon Derby. You should see the pile of prizes I’ve got stockpiled, thanks to all of our generous sponsors! Not to mention that the more people who sign up; the more cash gets awarded to 1st – 3rd and the more we are able to donate to the charity!

Currently, it looks like fishing will be great this weekend; and so will the weather! What better way to spend an afternoon than to fish for prizes while simultaneously contributing to a great cause? The folks from the Safe Harbor Free Clinic in Stanwood(this year’s derby donation recipient) will be at the weigh-in table both days with info and brochures and to answer any questions you have about their organization.

Hope to see you there!
